Add to Calendar 2017-05-27 20:30 2017-05-27 Jan Nijdam Kwartet at Bimhuis Double bassist Jan Nijdam plays his original compositions together with well-known improvisers, including music from the album Bij de dieren thuis. ‘Pleasant, playful and jumpy themes’ (Jazzflits).

Double bassist Jan Nijdam is renowned for his improvisational art as well as his pure tone, which reveals his classical training. In the late 1980s he made his Bimhuis debut with Gaviaal, the band that earned the stamp of approval of leading composer and improviser Misha Mengelberg. Since then, Nijdam has performed with many important Dutch improvisers.

Jan Nijdam performs original compositions with his Kwartet, which was founded in 2011 and features reeds player Tobias Delius (ICP Orchestra), pianist Michiel Scheen and percussionist Alan Purves. Their album Bij de dieren thuis, which appeared early 2017, was praised as ‘a varied album, alternating beauty with cutting edge improvisation’ (Jazzflits).
